Kalama has a unique and eclectic
history. Originally settled by a
Hawaiian, the town was one of the
largest communities in Washington and Oregon Territories. The community was established by the Northern Pacific Railway as the western terminus of the cross
continental rail system.
John Kalama -
Born in 1811 in Kula, Maui, Kalama came to the Pacific Northwest around 1830.
Tacoma Ferry - At
340 feet (103.6 meters) long, the steam powered ferry shuttled entire trains
across the Columbia River from
1884 to 1908.
Natural Resources -
Kalama’s economy for many years was dependent upon timber, fishing, and
for a brief period, gold mining.

The region’s geography has brought people through Kalama for milenia. Now highway, rail, and water meet
in Kalama.
